What Types of Graphite Cast Iron Are There? What Are Their Respective Application Areas?

2025-02-26

Graphite cast iron is classified according to the form and distribution of graphite, mainly including four types: gray cast iron, ductile cast iron, vermicular cast iron and white cast iron. Each type of cast iron has different physical properties and application characteristics, so they are widely used in different industrial fields. This article will introduce the characteristics of these four types of cast iron and their respective application fields in detail.

1. Gray cast iron: a common type of cast iron.

Graphite form: flake.

Features: Gray cast iron is a type of cast iron with high output and wide application. Its graphite is in flake form and distributed on the matrix, with good casting performance, cutting performance and wear resistance.

Application field: Gray cast iron is widely used in machinery manufacturing, construction, chemical industry and other fields. Especially in automobile engine cylinder block, pump body, valve, pipeline and other basic parts, it has been widely used.

2. Ductile cast iron: has higher strength and toughness.

Graphite form: spherical.

Features: Ductile iron is made of graphite in a spherical shape through spheroidization. This makes it have higher strength and toughness than gray cast iron, and has good wear and corrosion resistance.

Application areas: Ductile iron is widely used in mechanical manufacturing fields such as automobiles, tractors, and machine tools, especially in automotive parts (such as axles, gears, and engine parts) that require higher strength and toughness. It is also increasingly used in structural parts such as bridges and buildings.

3. White cast iron: has high hardness and wear resistance.

Graphite form: agglomerate or irregular.

Features: The graphite of white cast iron is agglomerate or irregular, and the matrix structure is pearlite or martensite. Due to its high hardness and wear resistance, white cast iron is suitable for manufacturing parts with high wear resistance requirements. However, its toughness is relatively poor, so it is not suitable for working conditions that are subject to impact or vibration.

Application areas: White cast iron is mainly used to manufacture wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant parts such as wear-resistant parts, knives, and scrapers. It is often used in mining machinery, metallurgical equipment, crusher parts and other fields with extremely high requirements for wear resistance.
