What Is Ductile Iron?

The development of nodular cast iron began in the 1950s. In 1947, H. Morrogh found that adding cerium to hypereutectic gray cast iron could make graphite spherical. Ductile iron precipitates carbon as spherical graphite during the solidification process, thereby avoiding the existence of sharp graphite in gray cast iron and significantly improving the strength utilization rate of the metal matrix, reaching 70-90%


How to deal with Ductile Irond?

Stress relief heat treatment



Heat the casting to the required temperature range, and the holding time is calculated based on the wall thickness (1+1h/25mm). Then it is reduced to 250 ° C in the kiln at a rate of 20 - 40 ° C/h. Finally, you can choose kiln cooling or air cooling.

Annealing:



Stress relief annealing is the same as gray cast iron, and the purpose is to reduce residual stress; the purpose of low-temperature annealing and high-temperature annealing is to decompose the carburite in the organization to obtain ferritic nodular cast iron, improve plasticity and toughness, and improve machining performance

Normalizing


 

The purpose is to increase the amount of pearlite in te matrix or obtain a matrix of all pearlite, refine the grains, and improve the strength and wear resistance of the casting.

Conditioning


The casting is heated to 860 - 920℃, preserved for 2 - 4 hours, quenched in oil, and then tempered at 550 - 600℃ for 2 - 4 hours to obtain a structure of tempered sorbite and spherical graphite.

Austempering


The casting is heated to 850 - 900℃, and after maintaining the temperature, it is quickly placed in a salt bath at 250 - 350℃ to isothermal for 60 - 90 minutes. Then it is taken out of the furnace and cooled in the air to obtain a structure of lower bainite matrix and spherical graphite.A

Mechanical processing:


After lining polishing, painting and labeling, the castings are packaged according to specifications.



Main Properties of Nodular Cast Iron


1. The tensile strength can reach 1400MPa, close to steel.

2. The elongation of treated nodular cast iron can reach 24%

3. Good casting performance and relatively low cost.

3. It has been successfully used to manufacture various parts with complex stresses and high requirements for strength and toughness, partially replacing cast steel and forged steel.
